Garage Door Questions, Answered for La Jolla
Short answers to the questions we hear most, from a snapped spring to a permit. For your own door, call and we will look at it on site.

When the Door Fails
What should I do right after a spring breaks?
Leave the door where it is, keep everyone away from it and do not run the opener. A broken spring leaves the door very heavy, and the opener is not built to lift that weight. Do not touch the springs, cables or bottom brackets, which are under tension. Call us and tell us what you heard.
Is my garage door balanced?
Close the door, pull the red release cord and lift the door by hand to about waist height. A balanced door stays where you leave it. If it drops or shoots up, stop and call. Leave the springs and cables alone.
Why does my door come down crooked?
Usually one lift cable has slipped or stretched, or one track has worked loose. Both cause the door to hang unevenly and can damage panels. A technician checks both sides and the rollers together.
Openers and Safety
How do I test the safety reverse on my opener?
Lay a 2x4 board flat on the floor under the door and close it with the opener. The door should touch the board and reverse. The Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests doing this every month. If it fails, stop using the opener and call us.
What should I have ready for an opener repair?
The opener brand and model number if you can read the label, plus what the unit does: hum, click, blink or stay silent. The brand and model decide the opener repair figure, which we quote in your garage.
Should a new opener have battery backup?
It is worth considering where outages are a worry, because a backup battery lets the opener work when the power is off. We can fit it with a new opener, and you decide at the visit.
Coastal Homes and Permits
Does ocean air really wear a garage door faster?
Damp, salty air speeds up rust on bare steel, so coils, bolts, cable ends and track corners show it first. We check these on every visit and tell you what can wait.
Does swapping my garage door call for a City permit?
It depends on the address and the work. The City of San Diego lists in-kind door replacement as a no-plan permit item on its permit page, and structures 45 years or older may get a historical review. Call Development Services at 619-446-5000 with your address before you decide.
Can you reach a hillside or alley garage?
We work in La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Bird Rock and University City, including hillside driveways and alley-side garages. Give us the cross streets when you call so the technician plans the route.
Booking and Photos
How do I send a photo of the door?
Use the visit form on any page and attach one picture. Stand in the driveway and fit the whole door in the frame. Keep faces, license plates and gate codes out of it.
Do you take calls on holidays?
Yes. Our phone line is open 24/7, including holidays and weekends.
