Choosing a Door for a Garage Near the Ocean

Fog, salt and damp air test a door every day. Ask what the finish is made of, how the bottom and side seals work, and how the sections are joined. An insulated, weather-sealed door keeps more of the outside air out, and it is a sensible fit for a garage close to the water. The National Weather Service in San Diego says fog is common on this coast, and fall and winter are usually the foggiest months.

Before You Order: Check the City Rules

Ask the City before you change how a garage looks from the street. In La Jolla Shores, the Planned District permit rules cover remodels and alterations, and like-for-like work usually stays outside them. The City's permit guide lists in-kind door replacement as a no-plan permit item, and Information Bulletin 203 notes that homes 45 years or older may need historical review.

Rules differ by address, so call San Diego Development Services at 619-446-5000 before you pick a style or color. We are not the permit office, and we will not guess for you.

2. You choose. We compare styles, insulation and finish with you.
3. You hear the price. It is confirmed before work starts.
4. We remove the old door. Its springs and hardware come out with it.
5. We hang the new door. New springs, tracks and hardware go in.
6. We test it. The door runs through its full travel while we watch both sides.
